Going Deep on the
– The Course –
Students & Parents
This section presents a long list of comments from students and parents about Mark’s teaching. Some were received on evaluations returned by students at the end of algebra and geometry courses Mark Emerson has taught (after they received their final grades). Others were received in letters, including from parents of Mark’s students. (Note: most of these comments are from algebra and geometry classes Mark taught in private-school programs he created.)
How well did Mark Emerson present his lectures?
Excellent — he made things very clear. Most teachers don’t.
Excellent — great presentation.
He made me very interested in the material and so I learned very quickly.
When Mark explained the lesson, I really understood.
The class was interesting. Mark’s different approach to teaching kept it from getting boring.
Great — never have understood as much before.
Amazingly well. I understood him better than ANY other teacher I’ve had in ANY class.
How well did Mark answer questions?
Complete, thorough, and right to the point.
He answered all questions asked until each student was satisfied. I enjoyed listening to his explanations.
The questions I had were answered well. He simplified the question and broke it down so I could understand.
I liked the way you explained things so well when somebody didn’t understand something. A+++
Flawless — answered every question I had.
“I had plenty of questions through the course. EVERY ONE was answered perfectly clearly.”
How much concern did Mark have for you and other students?
This is one thing that puts this class above others.
He really made an impression on me that he really cares about his students.
Mark has unceasing kindness for every individual in class. I have never met such a giving and conscious teacher.
I felt any difficulties I had were cleared up immediately and not put off until a later date.
Mark teaches very clearly, and with total commitment to the progress of each student.
How was Mark’s attitude?
His attitude helped me. He always had a good attitude.
The best I have seen in a teacher in a long time.
He treated us on his level, not like children.
Mark teaches without any prejudice towards a student’s learning ability.
Enthusiastic — he made you want to understand it.
He acted like he enjoyed math, unlike other teachers.
He was always smiling and made a lousy day more pleasant.
What was the atmosphere in the class like?
When I first got here, I thought it would be just like any old math class. Wrong. It was VERY interesting.
Very casual. That’s the way a class SHOULD feel.
The class was down to earth, loose, and easy going.
Four hours was a long time, but the class succeeded in holding my interest all through the day.
I’ve never had a class where I’ve been so comfortable.
How relevant was the subject matter to you?
It helped me organize the way I think.
More relevant than I thought it could be.
As a result of taking the class, I feel so much better about myself.
None of the material was unnecessary.
The logic of this course will stay with me forever.
It became relevant when it was explained how necessary math is.
It helped me to organize my thoughts. Therefore (since my thoughts were very scattered upon entering the class) it has been very relevant.
The most important course of my school career.
Mark has written his own text materials for the course. How do they compare with other math text books you have used?
They don’t compare. I clearly found myself learning the material and remembering much more rapidly.
Mark’s course materials helped me see the light. Books at my regular school stink.
They really helped; they told us what we needed to know.
I understood the materials in Mark’s class much better than at my regular school.
1000% easier to understand.
I’m going to copy them and sell them for a million dollars a copy! (Haha!)
They helped me see the light. Books at my regular school stink.
They were far, far better.
Do you think you are a stronger thinker and a better-educated person as a result of taking the class?
Most definitely, the class got my mind going again.
Yes. Before this class, I was completely turned off from math. Now it is a different story. I’d like to thank all of you for reopening doors that had been shut by my regular school. I’ve gained a great deal of knowledge from this course and I’ll carry it with me wherever I am.
I feel so much better about myself.
We believe that we have learned more from Mr. Emerson than from any other teacher we have had thus far. Each class member has gotten a new, constructive outlook on education and study habits from Mr. Emerson’s class. We have been taught by a teacher that understands our needs and desires and includes them with what he insists we must learn.
What was the overall quality of the class?
Mark is the best teacher I have had in my 11 years of school.
He is a fantastic human being. I will never forget the positive impact Mark has made upon my life.
The best and clearest I’ve seen yet!
Plain and simple, Mark is the best math teacher I have ever had.
The class was interesting. Mark’s different approach to teaching kept it from getting boring.
A surprisingly broad-minded individual. I originally thought that math was the only thing he really knew, but when I heard him talk about the importance of knowledge to our society, as opposed to profits, my mind was completely changed. I realized what a clear-minded person Mark is.
General comments by students:
I’ve never learned so much from one class.
It was the best-structured course I’ve ever taken. It was definitely worth it.
The material was difficult but made less difficult through excellent explanations.
The class was hard but very rewarding.
The most provocative class I’ve taken.
I don’t like math, but I enjoyed the class, and everything just seemed to fall into place because it was presented in the right manner.
I am extremely happy that I took the class.
Excellently taught course. Thank you, I’ve learned more than in any other school class I’ve ever taken. Thank you very much.
Dear Mark, I’d like to tell you what a genuine pleasure it has been for me to have the opportunity of learning from you. You have a tremendous talent for making sense! There are very few people for whom I have a great deal of respect; I just want you to know that you are one of those few.
I thank God I took the class. Indirectly, it has probably changed my whole life.
We are extremely pleased with our daughter’s progress. For the first time, she is really enjoying math. Obviously, the teaching is stimulating and of excellent quality.
Mark’s ability to challenge and communicate with children and excite them intellectually is something that comes very naturally to him. He is unusually effective with gifted children.
My son feels that Mark’s teaching methods are incomparable to any of his former math teachers. We are very pleased with our son’s progress and want to thank you for doing such a thorough job.
I am delighted with the enthusiasm Kevin has expressed for the material and his awareness of his growing facility with it.
Mark has been innovative in his teaching techniques while also emphasizing the basics. His leadership has opened a new door for our son, who has blossomed intellectually and has a new incentive to excel.
Allen seems to be ENJOYING math for the first time. That to me is GREAT progress.
I was VERY impressed with Scott’s geometry notebook. At last, he is taking organized notes and doing his work.
Mr. Emerson’s professional ability, as well as his compassion for his students, make him a first-rate educator. Anyone who enlists his services will, without a doubt, grow on an intellectual level above and beyond what they had expected.
My husband, an engineering graduate and former math teacher was really enthused that Mr. Emerson was able to introduce concepts with such clarity and concreteness. He was envious that he could not introduce such graphic and tangible models and examples when he was teaching. He said that Mark’s approach not only enabled students to understand the subject matter, but it was the approach used in engineering school for problem-solving: understand the question asked, envision a physical representation, and then set up the mathematical expression.
The ingenuity of his educational solutions is impressive.
In reviewing your year’s plan before the term started, I didn’t give you much hope for success because I thought you set unattainably high goals. Your organization, execution, and fabulous teaching proved me wrong. You even caused a few problems at home — it’s embarrassing when Darren’s math has gone far beyond his father’s. He takes great pride in this and delights in teaching me.
My son got more than an education in solving for x and y, he learned critical thinking and a unified approach to all problem-solving. Three for the price of one, all before he finished the sixth grade. He recently scored in the 99th percentile in the math section of the Independent Schools Entrance Examination (ISEE). Believe me, my son is not a gifted student.
Mark began tutoring my daughter in geometry last year. His teaching methods turned her grade around from failing to excellent in less than a month. Of equal, or perhaps more, important to me as a parent, his teaching method has given her a sense of self-confidence in her own ability to reason through the material.
